Occupational Therapy

Occupational Therapy is a service provided to children who may have an injury, illness or disability that has impacted their performance in activities of daily living. The performance skill impacted may be due to deficits in fine motor skills, visual motor skills and/or sensory processing skills, which may affect handwriting, self-care, and/or leisure activities. Here at Special Kids our purpose is to help individuals restore and build skills necessary to participate in activities that are meaningful to the child.

Occupational Therapy helps children to learn the skills of living.

From self-care tasks like brushing teeth and zipping a jacket to handwriting and using utensils, these are the “occupations” of childhood and some children need extra support to master them.
Many of the children we serve face challenges processing sensory input from the world around them. This may show up as sensitivity to light, sound, or touch, or difficulty transitioning between activities or environments. Our Occupational Therapists work with each child to build independence, strengthen key skills, and help them function more confidently in daily life.
Therapy sessions are play-based and engaging, designed to break down complex tasks into manageable steps. Whether using toys, music, bubbles, or movement games, our goal is to make learning fun and meaningful.
After a thorough evaluation, we create a personalized treatment plan that reflects each child’s unique needs and goals. And from the very beginning, you’ll see our philosophy in action: “Play is a child’s work.”

How does my child get started?

Step 1: Referral
Special Kids is referral-based. When we receive a referral from your provider, that's when the process begins.

Step 2: Intake
The Patient Services Supervisor will call to set up an appointment for the initial evaluation with a therapist. The billing office will work to verify insurance and payment information.

Step 3: Evaluation
One of our therapists will conduct an evaluation with your child to see if therapy is recommended. They will determine how often your child should come for treatment, and then Special Kids will work with you to schedule your regular visits.
